“Music at the Cannery is an annual event that has been takes place at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site every Friday between the second week of July and the final Friday of August. It is an extremely popular event in the community and often sells out, with additional patrons who may have accompanying furry friends enjoying the music by donation on the lawn in front of the building. The concert series aims not only to provide an opportunity for the community, especially the senior demographic, to gather, connect and enjoy some good music, but also to highlight the intersection of art and labour, particularly in the marine industry. Workers across all industries have been using beat and song to pass long, arduous days since time immemorial. Music has the ability to allow the listener, singer or player to transcend beyond their present space and time, and this was very much the case during the cannery’s operation as groups sang songs to make it through the day, creating a symphony of voices and languages in time with the music in the machines. We honour this tradition by bringing music back to this space and providing our audience the opportunity to take a journey as so many would have through the years in that very place.”
